Johnson, Lemke and Sabraski tally wins at I-94

By Ray Beste
Sauk Centre, Mn (September 5th, 2009) – Before Friday night, Hutchinson, Mn veteran Jamie Lemke had not visited victory lane at I-94 Speedway since August 13th 1993. That all changed in a big way when the high powered Ford dominated the field on the way to his first victory of the season. Zach Johnson fended off a furious challenge from Marshall Fegers garnering his third speedway win of the season in the WISSOTA Late Model finale while Shane Sabraski gained top honors in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division. Jake Varnum put a cap on his track championship by tallying the win in the Legend Car A-main while Tim Johnson picked up win #20 on the season in the WISSOTA Street Stock division. Pennock, Mn hotshoe Ben Godbee reigned victorious in the four-cylinder feature event. Eager racefans and an ample supply of racecars greeted track officials for Season Championship night at I-94 Speedway.

Although Johnson and Justin Vogel each started in row four of the WISSOTA Street Stock A-main, both drivers charged forward enough to finish 1st and 2nd respectively. Johnson, who currently sits second in WISSOTA Street Stock National point steadily worked his way forward from his eighth starting spot picking up yet another win. Vogel settled for the second spot which was good enough to garner him his first ever track championship. Becker, Mn driver Chad Johnson turned in another steady run coming home third ahead of Fargo, ND traveler James Tandeski. Randy Laage rounded out the top five running order for the WISSOTA Street Stock division. Tandeski took the win in heat race one with Johnson completing his clean sweep in heat race two.

15-year old Brady Gerdes took the lead on lap one of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified finale. Gerdes seized control early on and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first lap. Brandon Nelson seized the lead on lap three as Shane Sabraski and Tyler Limoges began to charge forward. Limoges, who started eighth, cracked the top five near the midway point of the race. Eleventh starting Sabraski was the man on the march. Shane moved into second with seven laps remaining as a bevy of cautions halted action during the ladder stages of the event. With six laps remaining, Sabraski made the move for the lead as he took the point via the bottom groove in turn two. Back in traffic, Roscoe, Mn driver Pete Loecken made a nice charge to the front as he moved into fifth with four laps remaining. On the final trip around Sabraski made no mistakes and went on to score the victory. Sabraski capped off his Midwest Modified track point championship in the process as well. Nelson settled for a hard fought second with Matt Weisman third, Limoges fourth and Loecken the final member of the top five. Weisman, Gerdes and Jim Jacobson all picked up heat race wins for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds which featured 26 competitors.

The Legend car A-main featured a great battle between Jake Varnum and Rob Thurston. Varnum ultimately outlasted Thurston picking up the win and putting a cap on his track title as well. Jon Lewerer, Tony Robertson and Joe Kostreba each garnered top five finishes as well for the Legend car division. Thurston was victorious in the division's lone heat race.

Kent Wilms took the lead on lap one of the WISSOTA Modified finale. Wilms pedaled his machine around the top side of the speedway while Jamie Lemke settled into second. Lemke found the middle groove to his liking as he quickly moved up to challenge Wilms for the lead. A multi-car pile up ended the night of a few drivers while Wilms and Lemke continued their battle out front. With twelve laps still up on the board, Lemke made a power move to the inside of Wilms as the duo entered turn three. Lemke was able to make the move stick as he moved by into the lead. After an early caution, Danny Bayer began to work his way back to the front. Bayer worked the extreme top side of the speedway while most worked middle to bottom. Bayer, Jason Voigt and Wilms battled hard for the second spot with Bayer ultimately grabbing the spot in the end. Lemke was dominant in the remaining laps stretching his lead to over a straightaway as he cruised on to his first win of the season. Bayer had another steady run in the second spot ahead of Voigt, Wilms and Ryan Canon. Lemke's win in heat race one completed the clean sweep while Sabraski picked up the win in heat race two.

The WISSOTA Late Model finale proved to be a dandy with Zach Johnson taking the early lead. Johnson pedaled his Rayburn machine around the cushion while Mound, Mn hotshoe Marshall Fegers moved into second. The two front runners distanced themselves from the rest of the field as they battled for the top spot. Fegers inched closer and closer as the race wore on as He and Johnson battled door to door for the lead. With seven laps remaining, Johnson bounced a rut in turn two which allowed Fegers to bolt by into the lead. The duo continued to negotiate lap cars as Johnson stayed close behind Fegers. With four laps to go, Fegers hit the same rut that gave him the lead as Johnson blasted by down the backstretch. Fegers straightened his machine out and tried to reel in Johnson but it was not enough as Zach went on to score his third I-94 Speedway win of the season. Fegers had another great run coming home second ahead of WISSOTA Late Model National Point leader Jeff Wildung. Brady Johanneck and 2009 WISSOTA Late Model track Champion Shaun Peterson rounded out the top five. Wildung took the win in heat race action earlier in the evening.

The final event of the evening belonged to the 4-cylinder division. Pennock, Mn driver Ben Godbee scored his 15th win of the season (overall) as he blasted around the top side of the speedway picking up the win from his eighth starting spot. Cody Buccheit made a late surge in an attempt to win his third in as many weeks but ultimately settled for second. Shawn Fernkes, Adam Olson and Kurt Notch rounded out the top five for the four cylinder division which featured 17 cars. Olson and Mike Flickinger each scored a qualifying win earlier in the show.

Friday night marked the final night of the 2009 season at I-94 Speedway. The track staff would like to thank all the fans, pit crew members, sponsors and drivers that made the 2009 season a success. Stay tuned to www.i94speedways.com for more information regarding the 2010 season.
