Provinzino, Sabraski and Johnson victorious at I-94

By Ray Beste
Sauk Centre, Mn (August 28th, 2009) - In his first ever appearance at the speedway, Hibbing, Mn driver Jeff Provinzino scored his first ever I-94 Speedway victory in the WISSOTA Late Model division. Shane Sabraski proved once again why he is one of the best in the business tallying the win in the WISSOTA Modified division while Dan Ebert reigned victorious in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division. After winning the first six WISSOTA Street Stock main events of the season, Brainerd, Mn gunner Tim Johnson returned to victory lane in the division's A-main while Jon Lewerer (Legends) and Cody Buccheit (4-cylinders) each collected impressive feature wins as well.

As customary at the I-94 Speedway, the WISSOTA Street Stocks filed out onto the speedway with Dan McCain and Christina Wollak sharing the front row starting duties. Wollak took the early lead before row four starters Tim Johnson and Ryan Buer quickly made an onslaught toward the front. Johnson took the lead with Buer behind him as the rest of the field battled in tow. Buer tried everything in his power to overtake Johnson but never mounted a serious challenge as Johnson scored the victory. Justin Vogel was able to hold the second spot in the ladder stages of the event followed by Buer, Wollak and Chad Johnson. The fourth place finish by Wollak was her second top five finish in as many nights (KRA Speedway on Thursday). Heat race wins were collected by Johnson and Vogel.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main was dominated by Lakeshore, Mn mudslinger Dan Ebert. Ebert started from the outside of row one and was never seriously challenge during the 20-lap affair. Row three starter Corey Koenig had a great car once again and finished in the second spot for the third consecutive week. Pole-sitter Travis Vanderby had his best run to date finishing in the third spot ahead of Shane Sabraski and Jerry Esler. Twenty-three drivers signed in to do battle with heat race wins being collected by Ryan Studanski, Nate Barber and Esler.

Fourth starter Jon Lewerer picked up the win in the INEX Legend Car A-main. Lewerer endured some pressure from Jake Varnum but ultimately had the car to beat as he cruised on to yet another I-94 Speedway feature win. Varnum, who has been consistent all season, took home the seconds pot with Kasey Kurtz third, Mark Geer fourth and Joe Kostreba the final member of the top five running order. Varnum was victorious in the division's lone heat race.

Although Shane Sabraski tallied yet another win in the WISSOTA Modified finale, there were plenty of hard charging efforts taking place. Sabraski took the win from his seventh starting position while Elizabeth, Mn pilot Travis Saurer finished second from eighth. The driver to watch, however, was Hibbing, Mn standout Jeff Provinzino. Provinzino started in the sixteenth starting position and ended a great run in third. Dennis Bitzan, in his first appearance of the season finished fourth ahead of fifteenth starter Danny Bayer. All kinds of action could be found during the 20-lap affair which was dominated by the Rice, Mn product. Eric Thiesse and Ryan Canon reigned victorious in heat race action earlier in the program for the WISSOTA Modified division.

The aforementioned Provinzino proved to be too much in the WISSOTA Late Model finale. Fellow Hibbing, Mn driver Kyle Peterlin led early on before Provinzino was able to sneak by. Once Provinzino was out front he stretched his advantage and took the win in convincing fashion. Peterlin held on for a very strong second place finish ahead of two-time winner Jeff Hinkemeyer. Seth Brede had another steady run in the fourth position finishing one spot ahead of Sauk Rapids, Mn ace John Henkemeyer.

The final event of the evening belonged to the 4-cylinder division with Cody Buccheit picking up his second win in as many weeks. Willmar, Mn pilot Shawn Fernkes had a great run coming home second with eighth starter Ben Godbee in third. Tenth starter Matt Everts had a great run in the fourth spot with Adam Olson rounding out the top five. Buccheit and Godbee each tallied qualifying wins earlier in the show for the 4-cylinder division.

Join us once again this Friday night for the final race of the 2009 season. Season champions will be crowned with the first green flag waving at 7:30 p.m. For more information regarding I-94 Speedway log onto the track's website at www.i94speedways.com
