1st time winners highlight action at I-94

By Ray Beste
Sauk Centre, Mn (August 7th, 2009) – Ryan Canon scored his first win of the season Friday night at I-94 Speedway. Shaun Peterson scored the win in dramatic fashion in the WISSOTA Late Models while Brandon Nelson reigned victorious in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division. Jack Peterson tallied a mighty impressive feature win in the WISSOTA Street Stock finale while Ben Godbee scored the win in the Short Tracker division. Brad Hartigan picked up his second win of the season in the Legend Car A-main feature event. Die-hard drivers and racefans convened on a dreary Friday night for some great Amsoil Dirt Track Series racing, I-94 Speedway style.

The first A-main of the night belonged to the WISSOTA Street Stocks with Randy Laage taking the early lead. Laage led until a turn four altercation sent him to the rear with seven laps remaining. That handed over the lead to Pillager, Mn driver Jack Peterson who went on to score the win. Row four starter Tim Johnson steadily worked his forward during the duration of the event as he finished second ahead of point leader Justin Vogel. Dan McCain edged Tim Juven at the line for the fourth spot in a good battle. Peterson picked up the win in heat race one while Johnson took the checkers first in heat race two.

In only his second appearance of the season at the speedway, New London, Mn driver Brandon Nelson led wire to wire picking up the win in WISSOTA Midwest Modified competition. The win was not without a fight, however, as Shane Sabraski hounded Nelson for the final six laps. Ninth starter Nate Barber joined the fray during the remaining six laps as he finished a very strong third. Mark Pew collected his first career top five finishing in fourth ahead of 15-year old Brady Gerdes of Villard. Gerdes looked very strong during the 20-lap A-main starting twelfth and finishing in the final top five position. Kevin Kraemer, Jason Hoffman and Barber all tallied heat race wins earlier in the program for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division.

Dustin Johanneck took the lead on the opening lap of the WISSOTA Modified finale. Johanneck looked strong early on and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first lap. With three laps in the books, Dale Mathison overtook Johanneck for the lead with a power move exiting turn two. Danny Bayer quickly moved forward into second as He did his best to track down Mathison out front. Bayer inched closer and closer when the yellow flag dropped over the field on lap nine. That bunched up the field two by two behind Mathison. On the restart, Bayer broke something in the front suspension ending his evening as Mathison continued out front once again. At this point it was more than apparent that Canon was on the move. Canon sat in the third spot when the final yellow waved with eight laps remaining. Mathison hit his marks and maintained the lead with seven laps remaining while Dave Schroeder made a charge from deep in the pack. With six to go, Mathison jumped the cushion in turn one. Canon capitalized as he bolted by into the lead down the backstretch. In the remaining laps Canon would stretch his advantage and went on to take the win. Mathison had a very solid run in second ahead of Schroeder, Johanneck and Eric Thiesse. Shane Sabraski picked up the win in heat race one with Canon completing the sweep in heat race two.

Jeff Hinkemeyer took the lead on lap one of the WISSOTA Late Model feature event. Hinkemeyer was absolutely bolted early on as he checked out on the rest of the field. Dennis Hillson and Eric Breeschoten battled for the second spot while Hinkemeyer stretched his lead on lap five. By lap nine, Breeschoten had made the pass for second and began the long process of reeling in Hinkemeyer. Breeschoten's luck would end, however, with seven laps remaining when he came to a stop at the top of the speedway in turn three. A few more yellows halted action before Hinkemeyer held the lead over Shaun Peterson and Seth Brede with two laps remaining. Hinkemeyer negotiated turns one and two with ease before his machine quit as they raced down the backstretch. The eighth starting Peterson inherited the lead from there on out and went on to score the victory. Brede came home second ahead of Myron Tschakert, Hinkemeyer and Hillson. Zach Johnson was victorious in the division's lone heat race.

The final event of the night was won by KRA Speedway regular Ben Godbee. After starting eighth, Godbee steadily worked his way to the front scoring the win in an impressive fashion. Rookie Cody Buchheit had a very strong run in the second position ahead of Shawn Fernkes. Kurt Notch and Tom Gjerstad rounded out the top five for the Short Trackers.
