Wildung, Aho and Vogel top I-94 mains

By Ray Beste
Sauk Centre, Mn (July 17th, 2009) - Jeff Wildung once again proved why he is one the best in the business picking up the WISSOTA Late Model feature win Friday night at I-94 Speedway. Ryan Aho endured many great battles from a bevy of different competitors reigning victorious in the WISSOTA Modified finale while Dan Ebert scored his second speedway win of the season in WISSOTA Midwest Modified action. Justin Vogel finally put a stop to Tim Johnson's six race win streak in the WISSOTA Street Stock finale while Jake Varnum made the last lap pass picking up the win in Legend car action. Racefans from all over the state of Minnesota were treated to some tremendous Amsoil Dirt Track Series racing Friday night at the 3/8 mile High Banked oval located in Sauk Centre, Mn.

Josh Fredeen took the lead on the opening lap of th WISSOTA Street Stock A-main. Fourth starter Ryan Buer quickly moved up into second on lap two and immediately began to apply pressure to the backside of Fredeen. The first yellow of the event waved on lap three followed by a yellow on lap four before the Street Stocks began to establish a nice rhythm. Buer bolted by Fredeen for the lead on the restart while Tim Johnson and Vogel began to work their way forward. Johnson moved into the second with six laps remaining while Vogel moved into third. Back in traffic eleventh starter David Goulet began to flex a little muscle. The Sauk Rapids, Mn pilot found himself in the top five with five laps remaining. With fifteen laps in the books Johnson began to apply heavy pressure to the backside of Buer. Buer, however, maintained the lead for the time being. The final trip around, Buer moved the bottom in an attempt to block Johnson's momentum. Johnson then moved to the outside pulling event with Buer down the backstretch. As the front duo entered turns three and four on the final circuit they made contact sending each competitor spinning in the process. That left the door open for Vogel who charged down through the grass on his way to victory. Buer was rewarded the second spot followed by Fredeen, Goulet and thirteenth starter Tim Juven. Johnson and Vogel were each victorious in heat race action earlier in the program for the WISSOTA Streets.

Former National Champion Travis Saurer took the lead on the opening lap of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event. Saurer quickly stretched his advantage early on while fifth starter Jeremy Kerzman immediately moved into second. Saurer held the lead out front followed by Kerzman, Matt Weisman and Shane Sabraski. On lap five, however, Sabraski would retired pitside with rear suspension trouble which moved up the field one position. Kerzman began to inch closer and closer to Saurer out front while Lakeshore, Mn driver Ebert moved into third. With nine laps still up on the board, Kerzman worked to the inside of Saurer for the top spot. Saurer fought back on the high side on maintained his lead for the time being. While Saurer and Kerzman battled for the lead, Ebert began to inch closer and closer to the two front runners. Kerzman successfully made the pass for the lead on lap thirteen while the front runners began to negotiate several lap cars. Ebert made a power move to the inside of Saurer stealing the second spot with five laps remaining while Kerzman continued to lead out front. Twenty-first starter Matt Halls entered the top ten with five laps remaining while Ebert closed to within two car legnths of Kerzman. On the final trip around Ebert made a bonzai move the inside of Kerzman in turn one. Kerzman fought back on the outside as they drag raced down the backstretch door to door. Ebert once again stuck his nose to the inside of Kerzman making the pass on the final corner and ultimately picking up the win in dramatic fashion. Kerzman, who has been red hot as of late, settled for the second spot followed by Saurer, Weisman and Motely's Jerry Esler. The 26-WISSOTA Midwest Modified competitors on hand were divided into three heat races with Saurer, Kerzman and Sabraski all tallying wins.

The Legend car featured a great battle between Morris' Jake Varnum and Olivia's Rob Thurston. Thurston look like he had the race in hand until the final trip around when Varnum was able to steal the victory by mere inches at the line over Thurston. Local product Brad Hartigan moved up to third during the duration of the event while Kasey Kurtz and Dennis Dahl rounded out the top five running order. Thurston was victorious in the division's lone heat race.

Jake Wildman and Travis Saurer shared the front row starting duties for the 20-lap WISSOTA Modified finale. Head flagman Buzzy Cripe dropped the green over the field with Saurer grabbing the early lead. Row two starters Scott Gilbertson and Jamie Lemke quickly moved into second and third respectively while Saurer held the advantage out front. Back in traffic, Craig Christiansen, Ryan Canon and Curt Lund battle for the fifth spot. Christiansen held the position for the time being. Seven laps into the event, Lemke and Gilbertson made contact off of turn four. The contact looked harmless enough but each competitor retired pitside when the caution waved eight laps into the event. The field stacked up two by two behind Saurer as the green dropped once again. Aho quickly worked to the inside of Saurer for the top spot while fourteenth starter Shane Sabraski began to charge his way through the field. Sabraski moved by Lund and Canon entering the top five with eight laps remaining while the battle up front had reached it's boiling point. Two more laps clicked off with Sabraski charging forward when Aho made a power move to the inside of Saurer exiting turn four. Aho was able to make the move stick as he moved into the lead with five to go. Saurer was left to do battle with Sabraski for the second spot while Aho did his best to hold the lead out front. In the remaining laps, however, Aho made no mistakes and went on to score the feature win in his first ever visit to the I-94 Speedway. Saurer had a tremendous run coming home second ahead of Sabraski, Danny Bayer and Christiansen. Fourteen WISSOTA Modifieds signed in for battle with Lund and Canon each picking up heat race wins.

The final event of the evening belonged to the WISSOTA Late Models. Willmar's Seth Brede and Hibbing's Kyle Peterlin occuppied row one starting positions as 25-laps were put up on the lap counter. The green flag dropped over the competitors with St. Cloud, Mn legend Jeff Hinkemeyer finding the extreme bottom of the speedway to his liking. Hinkemeyer bottled past Brede and Peterlin and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first lap. Fifth starter Eric Breeschoten found the top of the speedway to his liking early on as he moved into third on lap three. Back in traffic two time winner Wildung decided it was "go-time" eight laps into the event. Wildung negotiated Shaun Peterson and Brady Johanneck moving into the top five in the process. The first yellow of the event waved on lap eleven which stacked up the cars two by two behind race leading Hinkemeyer. When the green dropped again Hinkemeyer once again blasted out to a nice advantage. Wildung moved by Peterlin for the fourth spot via the high groove in turn two and immediately set his sights on Brede. WIldung climbed the ladder in turns three and four and blasted by Brede for the third spot with twelve laps remaining as Hinkemeyer still held the advantage out front. With eleven to go, the yellow flag waved once again for a pile up on the frontstretch. Brady Johanneck and Doug Herrick were claimed in the incident while action was restored. Breeschoten and Wildung shared row two as Hinkemeyer brought the field to the green once again. As the field entered turn one, Wildung once again used the outside of the speedway to move by Breeschoten for the second spot. While most cars ran near the inside tire barrier, Wildung found the middle of the speedway to his liking. The #50 of Wilung wasted little time as he bolted by Hinkemeyer for the lead with eight to go. Peterlin and Shaun Peterson waged the best battle on the speedway for the fourth sport with Peterlin running the bottom and Peterson in the middle groove. The final yellow of the event waved on lap nineteen which set up a six lap dash to the finish. In the remaining six laps, however, it was Wildung crusing on to his third win of the season at the speedway. Hinkemeyer had a very impressive run coming home second followed by Breeschoten in third, Peterlin in fourth and Peterson rounding the top five. The 12-WISSOTA Late Model competitors on hand were split into two heat races which were won by Johanneck and Breeschoten.
